Narrative
FLT INITIATED A MAX PWR TKOF ON RWY WITH A SUBSEQUENT L TURN TO A 270 DEG HDG. PRIOR TO ROLLOUT; AT OR ABOUT 1000 FT AGL; A LOUD BANG (THUD); WAS HEARD FROM THE L SIDE OF ACFT; ACCOMPANIED BY A L ROLL; YAW AND VIBRATION. A BRIEF MOMENT LATER L ENG FIRE WARNING ANNUNCIATED; FOLLOWED BY SMOKE AND FUMES IN THE COCKPIT. CREW; WHILE STILL ON TWR FREQ; DECLARED AN EMER AND REQUESTED FIRE AND RESCUE PERSONNEL. IN VISUAL CONDITIONS THE ACFT WAS MANEUVERED TO A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY; WHILE THE L ENG WAS BEING SHUT DOWN. L ENG FIRE WARNING INDICATIONS REMAINED ILLUMINATED; WITH THE ENG SHUT DOWN AND BOTH FIRE BOTTLES DISPENSED. CREW COMPLETED AN UNEVENTFUL SINGLE ENG APCH AND OVERWT (APPROX 211000 LBS) LNDG. CREW RECEIVED VERIFICATION FROM TWR; WITH CONCURRENCE FROM OTHER ACFT AND RESCUE PERSONNEL; THAT NO FIRE WAS PRESENT ON OUR ACFT. ACFT WAS STOPPED AND SHUTDOWN ON THE RWY AND NO EVAC INITIATED. ACFT SUBSEQUENTLY TOWED TO GATE AND PAX DEPLANED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 741174: WINDS WERE 180 DEGS AT 8 KTS TEMP WAS AROUND 22-26 DEGS C; VISIBILITY WAS GOOD; AND THE ACFT WT WAS AROUND 217000 LBS. MY LEG; WE USED MAX PWR FOR THE TKOF DUE TO THE TAILWIND. AROUND 1000 FT AGL WE HEAR A LOUD BANG AND THE ACFT FLINCHES TO THE L. I THOUGHT WE HIT SOMETHING. SMOKE STARTED COMING IN THROUGH THE AIR CONDITIONING SO I DONNED MY OXYGEN MASK (WHICH BROKE MY EAR PIECE AND MADE IT HARD TO HEAR UNTIL I TURNED THE SPEAKER UP). SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 741190: THE CAPT NOTIFIED US THAT THE L ENG HAD 'EXPLODED' AND WAS ON FIRE AND WE WOULD BE RETURNING AND MAKING AN EMER LNDG AND POSSIBLY HAVE TO EVAC. THE WHOLE EPISODE TOOK 7 MINS FROM TKOF TO LNDG.
