A320 DIVERTS TO NEAREST ARPT FOLLOWING COMPRESSOR STALLS AND SHUTDOWN OF RIGHT ENGINE.

Narrative

WE WERE AT FL360 AND HEARD A COUPLE OF LOUD BOOMS. THE NOISE AND VIBRATION MADE IT OBVIOUS THE ENG STALLED OR WE HIT SOMETHING. I LOOKED AT THE ENG INSTS AND SAW THE #2 EGT AND N1 WINDING DOWN. I TOLD THE FO TO PULL THE THROTTLE TO IDLE. I TOLD THE FO TO FLY THE AIRPLANE AND I WOULD WORK THE PROB. HE SAID THAT WE COULD NOT HOLD ALT; SO I CALLED ATC AND REQUESTED A LOWER ALT. ATC ISSUED FL240 AND WE STARTED A DSCNT. WE INITIATED THE QRC FOR ENG STALL; THEN GOT OUT THE MANUAL FOR THE IRREGULAR PROC. IN THE PROC; WE INCREASED THE #2 THRUST LEVER TO CLB PWR (THIS WAS AT APPROX FL270) AND NOTHING HAPPENED. THE FO POINTED OUT THAT THE PWR WAS AT IDLE. I INCREASED THE SPD TO SOMETHING HIGHER AND AS THE PWR WAS INCREASED; WE HEARD THE LOUD 'BOOM; BOOM' AGAIN. THEN WE PULLED THE THRUST LEVER BACK TO IDLE. WHEN WE INITIALLY CALLED ATC; THEY HAD SUGGESTED THAT ZZZ1 AND ZZZ WERE THE CLOSEST ARPTS. NOW I REQUESTED ZZZ WX FROM ACARS AND REQUESTED DISPATCH CALL ME. THE ZZZ WX WAS VFR AND DISPATCH CALLED. I TOLD HIM OF OUR SITUATION AND THAT WE WERE GOING TO DIVERT INTO ZZZ. HE REITERATED THE ZZZ WX AND THAT HE WOULD ADVISE ZZZ OPS OF OUR ARR. WHILE I WAS DOING THIS; I TOLD THE FO TO DECLARE AN EMER AND CALL FOR THE TRUCKS. THE FLT ATTENDANT HAD CALLED AFTER THE FIRST STALL AND THOUGHT WE HAD A YAW DAMPER PROB. I TOLD HER THAT IT WAS AN ENG AND THAT I WOULD CALL HER BACK. SO AFTER TALKING TO DISPATCH; I CALLED THE FLT ATTENDANT AND TOLD HER THAT WE HAD AN ENG SHUTDOWN AND WERE DIVERTING INTO ZZZ. I ASKED HER TO DO AN ADVISORY; THAT IT WOULD PROBABLY BE A NORMAL LNDG; AND WE WOULD BE ON THE GND IN APPROX 15 MINS. AT THIS TIME WE GOT BUSY WITH THE DSCNT. IT WAS MOSTLY UNEVENTFUL FROM THERE EXCEPT WE WERE A LITTLE HIGH ON APCH AND HAD TO DO SOME S-TURNS ON FINAL TO GET DOWN. WE LANDED ON RWY 9 AND ROLLED OUT ALMOST TO THE END.
