Narrative
CLBING THROUGH 2500 FT MSL 'L HYD PRESS' EICAS FOLLOWED BY 'L HYD QTY' EICAS; FO CONTINUED TO FLY WHILE I HANDLED THE CHKLIST. AFTER TURNING OFF L HYD PUMPS AND READING ALL SYS AFFECTED; ALONG WITH THE CAUTION CONCERNING CONTINUATION AND SUBSEQUENT HYD SYS FAILURES; I CHOOSE TO RETURN TO ZZZZ. CLRED TO ABC NDB WHERE WE SLOWED AND CONFIGURED (ALT FLAP/ALT GEAR). GOT VISUAL CLRNC TO LAND; TOOK CTLS AT 2000 FT MSL; LANDED AT FLAPS 20 DEGS; REF 30+20 (160 KTS). SMOOTH LNDG (30-50 FPM) ABOUT 2500 FT DOWN THE RWY AT 215300 LBS. SLOWED GRADUALLY TO ABOUT 500 FT SHORT OF THE END OF THE RWY (OR AT THE TURN BUTTON YELLOW LINE). AFTER REALIZING THAT THE NOSEWHEEL STEERING WAS ALSO LOST; CALLED TWR AND ADVISED UNABLE TO CLR RWY; CALLED OPS FOR TUG AND STARTED APU ALL WITHIN 5 MINS. AARF CAME ALONG SIDE L OF AIRPLANE; I BELIEVE IT WAS AT THIS TIME I SET THE BRAKES SO I COULD MAKE A PA TO THE PAX ABOUT THE AARF AND THE FACT THAT IS NORMAL. AFTER WHICH TIME WE SHUT DOWN THE ENGS. AT THIS POINT I GOT DISTR WITH RADIO CALLS AND DID NOT RELEASE THE BRAKES. THE AARF AT NO TIME HOOKED UP OR MADE ANY HAND SIGNALS TO US. IT TOOK THE TUG ABOUT 30-35 MINS TO ARRIVE AT THE ACFT. BY THIS TIME THE BRAKES WERE COOKED. MAINT SPENT ABOUT AN HR AND A HALF TRYING TO FREE/COOL DOWN THE BRAKES AT WHICH TIME VANS WERE BROUGHT OUT TO DEPLANE THE PAX. THE FLT ATTENDANTS DEPLANED.
