AFTER A QEC OF A GE-CF34 ENGINE; ON A CL-600 (CRJ-700); MECHANIC REALIZES AN ALUMINUM CAP WAS STILL INSTALLED ON THE ACCESSORY GEAR BOX (AGB); INSTEAD OF THE REQUIRED STAINLESS STEEL TYPE.

Narrative

IMPROPER PART; REALIZATION OF INCORRECT CAP INSTALLED ON ACCESSORY GEAR BOX (AGB) OF ENG RPTED TO SUPVR. SUPVR INFORMED GATE MAINT TO INQUIRE ABOUT LOCATION OF ACFT X. IT WAS AT THE GATE AND READY TO DEPART. SUPVR MADE ARRANGEMENTS WITH GATE MAINT FOR ENG SHOP TO FIX THE PROB PRIOR TO ACFT DEP. PROB FIXED AND ACFT DEPARTED ON TIME WITH NO DELAYS. DURING QEC OF THE ENG FOR ACFT X WHICH WAS AOG; THE INCORRECT CAP WAS NOT DISCOVERED DURING OUR INSPECTION AND/OR THE RECEIVING INSPECTIONS BY OUR INSPECTION DEPT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THERE ARE OTHER ALUMINUM CAPS INSTALLED ON THEIR GE-CF34 ENGINES WHICH ARE COLOR CODED BLUE. BUT THE OIL CAP ON THE ACCESSORY GEAR BOX IS STAINLESS STEEL AND NOT COLOR CODED. REPORTER STATED THE VENDOR HAS SHIPPED THESE ENGINES WITH THE BLUE ALUMINUM CAPS INSTALLED. HE HAS ALSO SEEN PLASTIC CAPS WHERE THE STAINLESS STEEL TYPE SHOULD BE. REPORTER STATED HIS CARRIER HAS ADDED A MAINT ITEM TO THEIR MAINT TASK CARDS TO SPECIFICALLY CHECK FOR CORRECT CAP INSTALLATION; ESPECIALLY DURING ENGINE CHANGES.
