Synopsis
A B757-200 Captain had to brake hard after landing due to a conflicting heavy aircraft rolling out on an intersecting runway. The Local Controller may have been distracted by calling for a go-around to a third aircraft approaching a crossing; although not intersecting; runway with respect to the landing heavy.
Narrative
Arriving ORD for VFR approach to Runway 10. Advertised arrival runways were 10; 9R; 4R. Upon call to Tower; was instructed to expedite to M3 Taxiway upon landing. Shortly after; a heavy aircraft reported final approach for 32L. Shortly after that; Tower directed an RJ approaching 4R to go-around. After a short pause; Tower directed the RJ to expedite his go-around and climbout; and seemed distracted by this maneuver. Meanwhile; I looked right to locate both the approaching heavy to 32L; and the aircraft going around on 4R; while flying on short final for 10. Our instructions remained to expedite to Taxiway M3. I touched down; and as I was slowing the aircraft through about 120 KTS with speed brakes already deployed. I saw the heavy touching down on 32L; not moving in our windscreen. At this point; tower asked us if we could hold short of 32L. Since we were still slowing just under 90 KTS; the Copilot hesitated; but I told him to say we would; but the controller quickly repeated his inquiry as to whether we could hold short of 32L. I believe the Tower Controller understood that he had no other options; since both aircraft were on the ground; and intersecting at high speed. I braked hard; and told my Copilot to tell tower we would make Taxiway K; and that relieved the Tower Controller as the heavy rolled by on 32L. The remainder of the taxi to the gate was relatively uneventful.
