Synopsis

An A320 flight crew shut down the right engine and diverted when compressor stalls were followed by a loss of oil quanity.

Narrative

Enroute at FL360 in clear skies and smooth air; noticed on lower ECAM page an engine and VIB indications pulsing. This is unusual. Pulled out flight manual which says pulsing indications occur when the vibration exceeds 5 units; however the pulse indications were only between 0 and 1. The Captain called maintenance control on ACARS and I flew the airplane. All engine indications normal. A while later we got an engine OIL FILTER NO 2 CLOG ECAM. We ran the flight manual checklist for clog which calls for affected bleed off then in the middle of the checklist we heard a very loud bang and the plane yawed noticeably. A stall ECAM then occurred and disappeared after about two seconds. Engine indications now normal. Soon thereafter OIL FILTER CLOG appeared again. Went back to that list. Then another loud bang followed by a STALL ECAM which again only lasted three seconds. This was followed by normal screens and engine instruments. Finally got CLOG ECAM followed by a bang and STALL ECAM followed by zero oil quantity indication. Shut down the engine by ECAM; ran driftdown list and diverted to a nearby airport uneventfully.

Second reporter narrative

We got an ENG 2 OIL FILTER CLOG ECAM. This occurred at 1+45 into the flight. I remember this because we had a Flight Attendant in the cockpit as we were just finishing up a break. Just before she left; the Flight Attendant guarding the cockpit door called up and reported a smell of burning wires. The First Officer went back to investigate while I got out the checklist. The First Officer came back and said he couldn't smell anything out of the ordinary ...About this time; maintenance control sent a message asking if the OIL QTY and OIL Pressure on the number 2 engine were okay. I checked both indications and they appeared normal. I checked them about 30 seconds later and saw the number 2 engine OIL QTY pulsing 0. I pointed this out to the First Officer and started to reach for the Engine Shutdown Checklist when the Engine Shutdown ECAM displayed. We silenced the aural warnings and accomplished the ECAM.
