Synopsis
B757 flight crew reports ground conflict with regional jet during taxi out; which resulted in an abrupt stop causing injuries to flight attendant's.
Narrative
Ground Control told us to follow the B757 ahead of us to 9R. We began taxi behind the 757 and as we started to turn onto Taxiway A I saw another aircraft taxing on A and it appeared he was not stopping but rather cutting us off. I made an abrupt stop as I did not think the other aircraft was stopping. Ground Control then told the other aircraft to hold and gave us clearance to continue taxi. There was enough room to continue so we proceeded to taxi. I do not fault Ground Control in any way; in fact I think Ground saw what was happening and told the other aircraft to follow us. The other aircraft should have seen both 757's taxing and not tried to cut between us regardless of any taxi instructions. He had to have seen us as he had already completed his turn onto A. We called back immediately to see if the Flight Attendants were ok. Our Purser told us they were fine but she may write a report about it. We told her it was no problem returning to gate if they wanted to but she said they were ok. After leveling off in flight; I called and talked again. She said she had soreness in her neck. I asked her to get information from all the other Flight Attendant's and let me know if they were ok. She then reported that all Flight Attendant's had neck or back soreness. Paramedics did check all the Flight Attendant's upon arrival. All Flight Attendant's then came to the hotel with us for layover. I believe the Flight Attendant's did fly their trips the following day.
Second reporter narrative
We were cleared to follow a B757 in front of us to the runway. We were doing that and were turning right onto Alpha Taxiway. We noticed a small regional jet close to our left side and approaching us. We stopped abruptly. The regional jet stopped also; and then Ground cleared us to continue. We checked with the Flight Attendants to insure they were all OK and if they wanted to return to the gate. They said they wanted to continue with the flight. Enroute; we spoke with the Purser again; and the Flight Attendants decided they wanted to have medical personnel meet them upon landing.
