A B757-200 diverted to a nearby airport for a maintenance inspection when a Flight Attendant reported an extremely loud noise emanating form door 2L.

Narrative

The Flight Attendant at door 2L reported a loud unusual noise coming from the door and said the noise was so loud it was hurting her ears. I called Dispatch and Maintenance Control to ask for any help and we considered a possible diversion. Communicating near door 2L was difficult and I agreed to let the First Officer inspect the area. His evaluation was that the noise was indeed extreme and intolerable. We elected to divert and make an overweight landing. Maintenance Control said the overweight landing was not a problem and Maintenance would be advised of that necessity. Upon arrival; Maintenance saw that a portion of the inner door trim on door 2L had separated from the door frame and the door was closed on that piece. About 12 inches of this was outside of the aircraft causing the loud noise; vibration; and discomfort to my crew and passengers. The main seal was intact and inspected and the aircraft was also inspected for the overweight landing. The flight continued without further incident.
