Synopsis

Both A320 new series FMGCs blanked and both ND's showed MAP UNAVAILABLE as the First Officer was sequencing waypoints on final approach to SEA. The ILS was manually turned to complete the approach.

Narrative

While setting up for an approach to 16C at SEA; passing thru about 5;000 FT; the Captain asked me to sequence the box. There were about 3-4 points to delete. While I was deleting the points the MCDU froze up and would not allow any input. Seconds later we lost all data in the MCDU; lost both map displays; lost ILS signal. We still showed 1FD2 on the PFD so I guess the FMGC's were working. We both tried to do a lateral revision from a fix to get the 'New Destination' prompt but the box would not accept this. We figured out how to manually enter the ILS frequency with the standby nav technique (this is something we never do and stumbled to remember how to do it). This all happened within minutes of landing at a very inconvenient time. We broke out of the clouds and could make a visual approach thankfully. The box was trying to reinitialize itself but we landed before it fixed itself. We wanted to make a record of this incase there was a trend with the new box. Once again; it all happened when we were sequencing the box for final intercept.

Second reporter narrative

We were on a heading for vectors to Runway 16C at SEA. First Officer was sequencing the box and both NDs showed map unavailable and both FMGCs went blank. We put SEA back into the FMGC when it booted back up.
