Narrative
We got a Gear Disagree Warning message after take off. The gear would not retract completely. The nose gear seemed to disagree with the gear handle in the UP position. We referenced the Flight Manual for Gear Disagree message and completed it with satisfactory result of gear down with the gear lever down. We declared an emergency and decided to return [to departure airport] for maintenance. We notified ATC; briefed the flight attendants and notified Operations and asked them to inform our Dispatch that we were returning and to have Maintenance meet us at the gate. We completed all checklists and landed uneventfully. The landing was overweight at 71;000 LBS but we touched down very gently at 100 FPM to avoid an overweight inspection.The gear pins when installed should involve a maintenance write up in the logbook. The gear pins did not have flags attached to them which made it difficult to notice in a walk around inspection. Pilots should be trained with the location of the gear pins shown installed on an actual airplane rather than on a walk around video presentation; especially for the nose gear. This would facilitate prompt identification of the pins if installed. Gear pins should be a bright color.
