A single-engine aircraft crashed into a mountainside in Kenya, resulting in the deaths of all nine people on board.

What happened

A single-engine aircraft was en route to Nairobi-Wilson Airport after completing a three-day excursion involving a safari and cinema visit. The flight carried one pilot and eight passengers. During the descent toward the airport, the aircraft encountered heavy mist, which significantly reduced visibility for the crew.

While navigating through these conditions, the aircraft collided with a mountain slope within the Ngong Hills region, situated approximately 20 km southwest of Wilson Airport. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the single-engine aircraft. There were nine fatalities recorded, as all occupants on board perished in the accident.

Findings

The investigation determined that the crash was a result of controlled flight into terrain. This occurred because the pilot descended to an altitude lower than the minimum safe level while operating in low-visibility conditions caused by mist.

Probable cause

The pilot descended below the required minimum safe altitude during periods of poor visibility caused by mist.
