What happened
During an attempt to land on runway 18, the flight crew encountered significant visibility issues caused by dense fog and marginal weather. After failing to establish visual contact with the runway, the captain initiated a go-around procedure. A subsequent attempt to land on the same runway was also unsuccessful due to the continued lack of visibility.
In response to the deteriorating conditions, the crew altered the flight path to approach runway 36 from the south. While flying at a speed of 350 km/h, the aircraft struck the ground approximately 5.5 km before reaching the runway threshold. The impact resulted in a post-crash fire that completely destroyed the plane. There were 13 fatalities among the occupants, with no survivors recorded.
Findings
Investigations into the accident concluded that the crew attempted to maintain their approach while flying at an inadequate altitude during periods of limited visibility.
