16 fatalitiesPonta Pelada AFB, Manaus, BrazilLanding (descent or approach)

An aircraft carrying Brazilian military personnel and families experienced an engine failure and subsequent explosion upon landing at Ponta Pelada AFB.

What happened

A flight traveling from Ponta Pelada AFB in Manaus toward Rio de Janeiro was transporting a group of Brazilian soldiers along with their family members. Approximately 20 minutes after takeoff, the crew identified mechanical issues involving one of the right-side engines. In response to this technical malfunction, the decision was made to abort the mission and return to the departure airfield for an emergency landing.

Upon reaching Manaus and completing the touchdown, a significant failure occurred when one of the right engines ignited and exploded. The pilot-in-command managed to bring the aircraft to a halt; however, the resulting fire consumed the plane. During the emergency, 36 individuals successfully evacuated the wreckage without injury, though 33 others sustained wounds. Tragically, the incident resulted in 16 fatalities, and the aircraft type was completely destroyed by the flames.

Findings

  • The crew identified a technical malfunction in the right engine during the initial flight phase.
  • An engine explosion and fire occurred immediately following the aircraft's contact with the runway.

Probable cause

A mechanical failure in the right engine led to an explosion and intense fire upon landing.
