What happened
On the route from Moscow to Khabarovsk, which included scheduled stops in Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk, an aircraft was operating flight SU005. The flight was transporting a cargo load of 417 kilograms along with a crew of four and three passengers. While maintaining a cruising altitude of approximately 3,000 meters, the flight encountered heavy thunderstorm activity.
The resulting severe turbulence caused the aircraft to lose stability and enter an uncontrolled dive. As the plane descended to an altitude between 500 and 1,000 meters, it suffered a structural failure and broke apart in mid-air. The wreckage was distributed across a wooded area and a field in Komarovo, situated roughly 37 km south-southwest of Kansk. There were seven fatalities among the occupants.
Findings
Investigations concluded that the primary reason for the loss of control was extreme turbulence that surpassed the structural design limits of specific aircraft components. Several contributing elements were identified, including inadequate flight preparation by the operator and a failure to account for potential worsening weather. Additionally, it was noted that the crew had not received an adequate briefing regarding meteorological conditions before departing from Krasnoyarsk Airport.
