What happened
On May 20, 2018, at 10:25 UTC, a pilot was conducting a training flight near Alvor beach in Portimão, Portugal. The aircraft, a Dudek Paragliders Snake XX 16 powered paraglider (PPG) with a Vittorazi Motors Monster 185 engine, took off from a local football field. The flight was intended for training purposes, specifically practicing low-altitude aerobatic figures.
During the flight, the pilot attempted a steep maneuver. While executing a tight left-hand turn, the pilot's right foot struck the ground, leading to a violent impact and a subsequent loss of control. The collision resulted in fatal injuries to the pilot.
The investigation
The GPIAAF investigation examined the aircraft, the engine, and the flight site. Investigators found no evidence of mechanical or structural failure in the wing or the powerplant prior to the accident. Analysis of the propeller damage indicated that the engine was under significant power at the moment of impact. The damage to the PPG assembly was consistent with the ground impact and the subsequent actions taken to release the pilot from the harness.
Findings
- The pilot was a highly experienced instructor who had been flying paragliders since 2007 and had participated in several international competitions.
- The primary cause of the accident was a miscalculation of ground distance during a tight left turn.
- Contributing factors included the execution of steep maneuvers at a low altitude and insufficient height to recover from a high rate of descent following the failed approach path.
- Meteorological conditions were favorable, with visibility exceeding 10km and winds at approximately 10 knots.
Safety action
- Safety Recommendation No. 10/2018: It is recommended that the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) comply with and enforce Regulation 164/2006, Article 68, regarding the assignment and visible display of control numbers on the wings of Group 1 (PPG) aircraft to improve identification and oversight.
