What happened
On February 12, 2021, a Cessna 182H was conducting a flight from the Los Vilos sector toward Aeródromo Diego Portales (SCLQ) in the Valparaíso Region. After approximately two hours and 45 minutes of flight time, the pilot attempted to return to the departure airfield. During the approach, the aircraft engine began to sputter and eventually ceased operation mid-flight.
Facing an imminent loss of power, the pilot performed an emergency landing on the E-3/D highway, approximately 12 nautical miles northeast of La Ligua. During the touchdown, the right wingtip fairing struck a tree. Both the pilot and the passenger survived the incident without injuries, though the aircraft sustained damage to the right wingtip.
The investigation
DGAC Chile investigators examined the aircraft's maintenance records, fuel levels, and the flight's operational history. The investigation confirmed that the aircraft's maintenance was up to date and that the engine and propeller were in functional condition, as evidenced by successful ground tests performed at the scene.
Investigators analyzed the fuel system, finding that the left fuel tank was completely empty, while the right tank contained approximately 13 US gallons. Laboratory analysis of the fuel from the right tank showed no signs of contamination. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's flight maneuvers, specifically noting the execution of steep turns during the flight.
