What happened
On May 1, 2022, at approximately 16:3 or 4:30 PM local time, a student pilot was conducting a training flight in the Las Vizcachas sector of Puente Alto, Metropolitan Region. The flight involved an Air Design Easy2-L paraglider. After taking off from a synthetic grass platform, the student pilot, who was flying solo while the instructor remained on the ground, decided to perform an unauthorized maneuver known as a "top landing," which involves returning to the original takeoff point.
During this attempt to return to the launch site, the pilot attempted a 180-degree turn but lacked sufficient space to complete the maneuver. The pilot approached the landing area perpendicularly with a tailwind, leading to a high-speed impact with the ground. The student pilot sustained serious injuries and was evacuated by emergency services to the Sotero del Rio Hospital.
The investigation
DGAC Chile investigators examined the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the flight. The investigation confirmed that the student pilot had obtained their license only three months prior and was currently enrolled in an introductory training program. The technical inspection of the Air Design Easy2-L revealed no mechanical issues or damage to the canopy, lines, or harness; the equipment was relatively new, having been manufactured in early 2021.
Investigators also reviewed the meteorological conditions, which were found to be suitable for paragliding, with light winds between 2 and 4 knots. However, the investigation established that the aircraft was not registered in the DGAC's official registry for unpowered ultralight vehicles, as required by local regulations.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was the abrupt impact with the ground while performing a "top landing" maneuver without the necessary training.
- The student pilot executed a maneuver that was neither part of the approved instructional program nor authorized by the flight instructor.
- The presence of a tailwind during the return to the platform increased the aircraft's speed during the maneuver.
- The pilot attempted to land in a space that was too restricted for the maneuver being attempted.
- The pilot failed to adhere to flight center prohibitions regarding this specific type of maneuver.
