Ground-loop incident involving Piper Pacer at Inisheer

Casualties unknown • IE

A private Piper P-22-160 Pacer experienced a ground-loop during landing at Inisheer, resulting in significant damage to the port side of the aircraft.

What happened

On July 5, 2003, at approximately 18:05 UTC, a Piper P-22-160 Pacer, registered G-BUXV, was performing a private visual flight rules (VFR) landing at Inisheer (EIRR). The flight had originated from Trim Airfield (EITM) and proceeded without incident until the arrival phase. At the time of the landing, weather conditions were favorable, with excellent visibility and minimal cloud cover at 3,000 feet. The pilot estimated the wind at the runway to be 250 degrees at 4 knots.

During the landing sequence on Runway 31, the aircraft experienced an initial bounce on the main wheels. Upon a second touchdown, the aircraft immediately entered a left-hand ground-loop. This uncontrolled movement caused the port undercarriage leg to collapse under the fuselage and led to the port wing tip striking the runway surface. The aircraft eventually came to a stop on the left edge of the runway.

The investigation

The investigation was based on the accident report submitted by the pilot. Investigators examined the condition of the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the landing. The aircraft, a 1959 model, was found to have been well-maintained and held a valid UK Certificate of Airworthiness. No mechanical or technical failures were identified prior to the event. The investigation also noted that while the pilot had 402 total flying hours, only 11 of those hours were accumulated on this specific aircraft type, though the pilot possessed significant experience operating tailwheel aircraft.

Findings

  • The aircraft sustained extensive damage to the port wing and port undercarriage leg, along with potential engine shockloading.
  • The sequence of events was initiated by a main wheel bounce during the landing roll.
  • There were no injuries to the single crew member or the three passengers on board.
  • The aircraft was in excellent mechanical condition with no pre-existing technical issues reported.

Probable cause

The aircraft entered a ground-loop following an initial bounce on the main wheels during the landing roll.
