Incident Overview
On a dual instructional flight in a Cessna 172SP, a certificated flight instructor (CFI) was providing training to a student pilot. The purpose of the flight was local air work practice, followed by takeoff and landing practice.
Sequence of Events
During the landing practice, the student executed a high approach that resulted in a go-around, followed by a successful landing. Subsequently, on the next approach, the student positioned the airplane at a higher altitude than normal on final approach. The CFI then took control of the aircraft and demonstrated a sideslip maneuver to reduce altitude. After losing some altitude, the CFI turned over the controls to the student and instructed him to land.
The touchdown speed was higher than normal, prompting the CFI to ask the student whether the power had been reduced. The CFI then instructed the student to apply aerodynamic braking. When the airplane did not appear to be slowing, the CFI attempted a go-around by applying power and pulling back on the yoke. As the airplane began to climb, the CFI saw the airport perimeter fence approaching and felt a "jolt."
Impact and Damage
The left main landing gear impacted the airport perimeter fence off the departure end of runway 1. The airplane then struck a guardrail and came to rest inverted on an adjacent road. The tailcone separated from the fuselage just aft of the cargo compartment. Neither pilot was injured, and the CFI reported no mechanical difficulties with the airplane prior to the accident.
