A student pilot returning solo to his departure airport experienced a stall during flare in 15-20 knot direct headwind, causing the left wing to drop and collide with a windsock pole, resulting in substantial damage.

Accident Overview

A student pilot, flying solo after completing a flight lesson, was returning to his departure airport. During the landing approach, the pilot observed the windsock indicating a direct headwind of approximately 15 to 20 knots aligned with the runway.

Sequence of Events

The student pilot responded by applying power. The aircraft subsequently became positioned approximately 90 degrees to the runway heading and about 8 feet above ground level, having moved off the runway surface. The left wing then struck a windsock pole, resulting in substantial damage to the wing.
