Incident Overview
A pilot experienced an engine power loss during a short field takeoff in an airplane, marking his first flight with a passenger onboard. The event occurred when the engine lost power at an altitude of 50 feet above the ground.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot’s account, after the power loss, he attempted an emergency landing. He lost control of the airplane during this maneuver. The aircraft subsequently impacted the runway, bounced, traveled about 90 feet, then impacted a second time. Following the second impact, it slid approximately 260 feet before coming to rest on the southeast edge of the runway.
Damage and Injuries
The airplane sustained substantial damage as a result of the landing sequence. Both occupants—the pilot and the passenger—reported minor injuries.
