Flight Details
The certified private pilot conducted a preflight inspection of the single-engine airplane before departing from a private airstrip. During the preflight, the pilot sumped the wing tanks and observed no water in the fuel; the oil level was slightly below eight quarts. After starting the engine, the pilot taxied to the end of the runway and performed two separate engine run-ups before departure.
Shortly after takeoff, at an altitude of approximately 50 feet above ground level, the engine stopped producing power. Unable to maintain altitude, the pilot executed a forced landing on the remaining section of the runway. After touchdown, the pilot swerved to avoid a parked airplane and subsequently ran into a ditch.
Post-Accident Examination
A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector examined the engine and airplane following the accident. The inspection revealed no mechanical deficiencies that would have resulted in a loss of engine power. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the firewall and both wings.
