Incident Overview
A pilot reported that he intended to practice flying skills in a local practice area after not having flown for 18 days. Shortly after takeoff, he decided instead to remain in the traffic pattern and perform a full-stop landing. According to the pilot's account, his approach was fast, and the airplane touched down past the midfield yellow marking. That marking designates the go-around point if the airplane has not touched down.
Sequence of Events
As the airplane passed the yellow line, the pilot became concerned that executing a go-around would not allow him to clear trees at the end of the runway. He therefore elected to continue the landing. The airplane subsequently traveled off the end of the runway, through a barricade, and down sloping terrain, where it nosed over.
Pilot's Assessment
The pilot stated he should have flown to the practice area to become comfortable with the airplane prior to landing, and/or he should have made the first landing at an airport with a longer, wider runway.
