Flight Details
The flight was a VFR instructional mission focused on mountain flying techniques and an Aero Club airplane checkout. A private certificated pilot who was also a student occupied the left seat, while a certified flight instructor (CFI) sat in the right seat.
Approach and Landing
The CFI directed the pilot to land at an airport with a runway length of 2,088 feet. The initial approach to the airport was judged to be high and fast, leading to an aborted landing attempt. During the second approach, the airplane again came in high and fast at 75 knots. The touchdown occurred approximately 600 to 800 feet beyond the runway threshold.
Accident Sequence
The runway surface consisted of compacted snow and ice, resulting in poor braking action. After touchdown, the airplane continued along the runway and collided with a snow berm at the end of the runway. The impact caused structural damage to the landing gear and fuselage. Throughout the approach and landing sequence, the flight instructor did not assume control of the airplane at any point.
