Accident Sequence
The Cessna 170B began to swerve to the right after the pilot corrected for a slight left drift while attempting a crosswind landing. Both the pilot and the flight instructor applied all available controls and the left brake in an effort to arrest the right turn. Despite these inputs, the airplane continued to veer to the right and skidded off the runway.
Wind Information
The flight instructor reported that the wind was a direct crosswind from the right at approximately 5 knots during the landing attempt. The nearest airport, located 30 miles to the east, recorded winds from an easterly direction at approximately 6 to 9 knots at the time of the accident.
Damage and Reporting
During the skid, the left wing contacted the runway surface, resulting in substantial damage to the aircraft. The pilot submitted a National Transportation Safety Board form 6120.1, on which he indicated that no mechanical malfunctions or failures were found.
