A pilot reported a wind shift creating a tailwind after landing, leading to a runway overrun and nose-over down an embankment, damaging the vertical stabilizer and left wing.

Background

The pilot of a single-engine airplane reported that he conducted a pre-landing check of the wind sock before initiating a standard traffic pattern. The approach was flown at a final approach speed of 70 knots with 20 degrees of flaps. The intended landing runway was runway 1, which has a length of 2,007 feet.

Accident Sequence

According to the pilot, the airplane touched down "a few hundred feet past the threshold" of runway 1. Shortly after touchdown, he perceived that a wind shift occurred, resulting in a tailwind condition. The pilot subsequently applied the brakes, but the airplane did not decelerate as expected. He then attempted to steer the airplane off the runway, but the airplane "would not steer." The airplane continued beyond the end of the runway, going down a 10-foot embankment, nosed over, and sustained damage to the vertical stabilizer and left wing.

Meteorological Conditions

Winds recorded at an airport located 15 miles to the southeast around the time of the accident were from 230 degrees true at 9 knots. The pilot did not report any mechanical anomalies with the airplane.
