Accident Details
During the descent for landing, the airplane's engine experienced a complete loss of power. The pilot responded by selecting the other fuel tank, which contained approximately 15 gallons, and attempted to restart the engine. When the restart attempt was unsuccessful, the pilot performed a forced landing in a city park. During the landing flare, the right wing of the airplane struck a tall sign post. The touchdown and subsequent rollout were otherwise successful.
Examination Findings
A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector examined the airplane at the scene. The inspection revealed that the right fuel tank was empty, while the left fuel tank contained 15 gallons. Following the recovery of the airplane, fuel was placed in the left tank. With the fuel selector positioned to the left tank, the engine was successfully run.
Pilot Statement
The pilot informed the inspector that he did not use a checklist during the restart attempt. Consequently, he neglected to activate the required fuel boost pump after switching fuel tanks.
