Accident Details
A pilot was landing on a dirt landing area that doubled as the main road in the center of a remote mountain town. The pilot intentionally touched down a little long to miss a substantial puddle of water near the approach end of the landing area.
Sequence of Events
After touchdown, as the airplane slowed to about 20 miles per hour, the pilot began applying the brakes. The brake application was of sufficient force to cause the airplane to nose over onto its back.
Damage
The sequence of events resulted in substantial damage to the vertical stabilizer and one wing lift strut.
Pilot Comments
The pilot reported that there was nothing wrong with the braking system. He stated that he should have either delayed his braking or applied the brakes with 'more finesse.'
