During a crosswind landing on runway 17R, the airplane flipped inverted after the left main wheel touched down and the aircraft weather vaneed left. Corrective actions failed to realign the aircraft, resulting in substantial damage.

Accident Details

The pilot conducted a crosswind landing approach to runway 17R. The winds were reported as 120 degrees at 15 knots. The pilot established a left crab angle of approximately seven degrees. Upon reaching the runway threshold, the pilot transitioned the airplane to a left side slip and aligned with the runway heading.

Maneuver and Loss of Control

During the flare, the left main wheel contacted the runway. The airplane then "weather vaned" to the left. The pilot applied corrective measures, but these failed to realign the airplane with the runway heading. Subsequently, the airplane flipped inverted and came to rest upside down on the runway.

Damage and Conditions

The accident resulted in substantial damage to the airplane. A special automated weather observation report taken near the time of the accident indicated winds from 140 degrees at 13 knots, gusting to 20 knots. No mechanical anomalies were reported with the airplane.
