Incident Overview
During a night approach to an airport, a pilot was instructed by air traffic control to expect runway 29. The pilot briefly consulted the approach chart and noted the runway length as more than 4,400 feet; however, after the accident, he learned that a displaced threshold reduced the available landing distance to 3,164 feet.
Approach and Landing
The pilot entered the downwind leg and then turned onto base leg after the controller requested that he proceed direct to the numbers at the best forward speed. The pilot chose to land with no flaps. On final approach, the controller advised the pilot to expedite through the intersection of runways 11/29 and 16/34.
The airplane touched down past the runway intersection. At the center of the intersection, approximately 2,854 feet of runway remained to the departure end of runway 29.
Overrun and Damage
According to a statement from the pilot-rated-passenger to the Federal Aviation Administration inspector-in-charge, the airplane's estimated speed on approach was 110 knots. The pilot reported that after touchdown, he was unable to stop the airplane. It traveled off the end of the runway, down an embankment, onto a service road, and collapsed the nose landing gear.
