Accident
On November 7, 2009, at approximately 0830 Pacific standard time, an experimental Piasecki/Pike PV-18 helicopter, registration N183YP, collided with high tension wires and subsequently impacted terrain near Adelanto, California. The helicopter was operated by the owner/pilot under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The two commercial pilots and one passenger on board sustained fatal injuries. The helicopter was substantially damaged by impact forces and a post-crash fire.
The flight departed Adelanto Airport (52CL) around 0825 as a local personal flight, with a planned destination of Riverside, California. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed.
Witness Account
A witness pilot, flying approximately half a mile behind and slightly above the accident helicopter, reported that he had established radio contact with the two pilots during their takeoff. Prior to the accident, the witness made multiple radio calls to warn the pilots about approaching power lines, but received no response. The witness noted that the helicopter appeared to be "laboring" at an altitude of about 300 feet, although he observed no smoke or visible mechanical issues. He subsequently saw the main rotor blade strike the power lines, after which the helicopter descended into the desert terrain and was engulfed in flames.
Wreckage Examination
On-scene examination of the wreckage revealed evidence of engine rotation. No anomalies were noted in the wreckage.
