Accident Overview
The accident occurred during a night departure from runway 3, a 4,700-foot-long, 75-foot-wide asphalt runway. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time. The pilot reported that after takeoff, he lost sight of outside visual references due to darkness and was initially unaware that the airplane was turning left. He added that he momentarily did not pay attention to the airplane's instruments, and when he realized the airplane was turning, it was too late.
Sequence of Events
The airplane struck trees located off the left side of the runway and subsequently impacted the ground. The pilot did not report any preimpact mechanical malfunctions.
Post-Crash Fire
After the pilot exited the airplane, a post-crash fire substantially consumed the aircraft.
Pilot Experience
The pilot estimated his total flight experience as 110 hours, including 10 hours of flight in night conditions. His logbook was consumed in the fire.
