Accident

A single-engine turboprop aircraft experienced a runway excursion during a go-around attempt after a landing approach. The pilot was operating under instrument flight rules (IFR) and canceled the IFR flight plan after being cleared for a visual approach to the destination airport. The pilot flew a left traffic pattern for runway 32, which is a 4,202-foot-long, 75-foot-wide asphalt runway.

According to the pilot's report, the airplane crossed the runway threshold at 81 knots and touched down normally, with the stall warning horn sounding. Shortly after touchdown, the airplane drifted to the left. The pilot attempted to correct the drift with right rudder input, but the airplane continued moving left. The pilot then initiated a go-around. Aware of the risk of torque roll at low speeds, the pilot did not apply full power. The airplane climbed to about 10 feet above ground level, at which point it was in a 20-degree left bank. The pilot applied full right aileron to correct the bank, but the airplane descended in a left turn. The pilot then retarded the throttle and braced for impact.

Investigation

A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector examined the wreckage and reported that the airplane traveled about 100 feet off the left side of the runway, nosed down in mud, and came to rest in trees. The inspection did not reveal any preimpact mechanical malfunctions, and the pilot did not report any. The reported wind at the time of the accident was from 310 degrees at 10 knots, gusting to 15 knots.
