Accident Sequence
The pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane conducted several touch-and-go landings before making a full-stop landing to taxi to the parking area and speak with friends. After a few minutes, the pilot took off again to perform one final landing before securing the airplane. During this subsequent takeoff, the pilot noted that wind speed had increased and that the landing would involve a gusting crosswind.
During the landing roll, the airplane was positioned along the leeward side of a row of hangars, which had occasional spaces between them. The airplane began to turn toward the left side of the runway, into the wind. The pilot applied full right brake and full right rudder but could not bring the airplane back to the right. In an attempt to regain control, the pilot added a significant amount of engine power. The airplane's ground track began to straighten after power was added, but the pilot kept the right wheel brake fully applied, causing the airplane to attain a nose-down attitude. As a result, the propeller began striking the runway surface.
With the propeller hitting the runway, the pilot reduced power, and the airplane turned further left. The left main wheel departed the left edge of the runway onto soft terrain. The left wheel sank into the soft ground, and with the right brake still fully applied, the airplane nosed over onto its back.
Damage
The accident sequence resulted in substantial damage to the vertical stabilizer, left wing, and left wing lift strut.
