Incident Overview
A pilot flying a tailwheel-equipped airplane experienced a loss of directional control during a crosswind landing on runway 31, resulting in a ground loop and collision with a runway light. The pilot reported that the airplane began to sink during the landing flare, leading to a bounced landing. After the second touchdown, he pushed the control yoke forward to raise the tail, intending to keep the main landing gear on the runway and prevent porpoising. He later described this action as “not a very good move” under the crosswind conditions.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, raising the tail caused the fuselage to restrict airflow past the rudder control surface, reducing rudder effectiveness. Despite applying right rudder and right brake, the airplane veered off the left side of the runway. The aircraft then ground-looped and struck a runway light.
Damage and Equipment
The right wing, right aileron, and right elevator sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported no pre-impact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have prevented normal operation. The airplane was equipped with 26-inch diameter tires and single puck brakes.
Pilot Observations
The pilot suggested that installing dual puck brakes might have provided increased braking power, which could have maintained directional control. He also noted that using a different runway better aligned with the wind might have prevented the accident. A local weather station reported the prevailing wind was from the west-southwest at 10 to 15 knots.
