Background
A student pilot, accompanied by a flight instructor, was conducting a simulated forced landing in preparation for an upcoming private pilot check ride. The exercise was intended to practice emergency procedures.
Accident Sequence
During the flare phase of the simulated forced landing, the student pilot abruptly pulled up on the collective and rolled the throttle in the wrong direction. This action caused the engine to sputter and then shut off. The flight instructor immediately attempted to recover the engine, but insufficient altitude remained for a successful restart.
The helicopter subsequently touched down on the right skid and bounced during the landing. The impact forces resulted in the separation of the tail boom from the fuselage.
