Accident Sequence
Approximately 15 minutes after takeoff, while maneuvering at about 100 feet above ground level, the engine experienced a partial power loss, described by the pilot as "bogged down." The pilot applied throttle but the engine did not respond. He scanned the engine gauges and observed no anomalies. Subsequently, the pilot applied carburetor heat, noting that there was little time as a landing was imminent. He elected to perform a forced landing to a wet, muddy field. During the landing, the airplane impacted the terrain and nosed over.
Examination Findings
An examination of the engine revealed no evidence of preimpact failure or malfunction. Examination of the airframe found that the vertical stabilizer and rudder were bent.
Environmental Conditions
The temperature and dew point at the time of the accident were conducive to serious icing at cruise power.
