During a soft field landing demonstration on a grass runway, a strong wind gust lifted the airplane's right wing, causing it to slide left and strike trees, resulting in substantial wing damage. No mechanical malfunctions were reported.

Accident Details

A flight instructor was demonstrating a soft field landing to a grass runway in a tricycle-gear airplane. The landing was being conducted on runway 34. According to the instructor, during the landing roll, a strong wind gust from the right lifted the airplane's right wing, causing the airplane to slide sideways to the left.

Sequence of Events

The student pilot reported that the airplane had landed on the runway midline. After the gust struck, the nose of the airplane turned to the left despite the instructor applying full right rudder and aileron. The left wing then grazed small tree branches before impacting a larger branch, which rotated the airplane counter-clockwise. The airplane came to rest perpendicular to the grass runway with the nose facing into the trees.

Damage

Substantial damage was sustained to the left wing tip and the right wing leading edge. Both the flight instructor and student pilot stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures of the airplane.

Weather Information

Weather reported about 9 miles east of the accident site included winds from 320 degrees at 12 knots, gusting to 17 knots.
