Summary
A pilot experienced a loss of engine power while on final approach to a destination airport, resulting in an off-airport landing that caused substantial damage to the aircraft. The pilot had checked fuel levels prior to the return leg of a cross-country flight.
Event Details
According to the pilot, the airplane was topped off with fuel before departing on the cross-country flight. Before the return trip, the pilot visually inspected the fuel tanks and estimated that the right tank contained 10 gallons and the left tank 12 gallons of fuel. While on final approach to the destination airport, the engine began to sputter and lost power. The pilot attempted an engine restart, including switching the fuel selector to another tank, but these efforts were unsuccessful. The airplane subsequently impacted terrain short of the runway.
Examination
An FAA inspector examined the aircraft after the event. The right fuel tank was found to be empty, while the left tank contained approximately 3.5 gallons of fuel. The inspector noted that both fuel tanks were intact, and there was no evidence of a fuel leak. In a verbal statement, the pilot said he suspected a fuel management issue.
