Overview
A private pilot was conducting a long cross-country flight. According to the pilot, the aircraft departed with approximately 55 gallons of fuel, estimated to provide about 3.5 hours of endurance. The flight proceeded uneventfully until approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes into the journey.
Engine Failure
While performing an Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach into the destination airport in visual meteorological conditions (VFR), the engine suddenly stopped. The propeller continued to windmill. The pilot attempted to restore power by pumping the throttle and eventually pushing it fully forward, but no thrust was produced. The pilot checked the engine gauges, which appeared normal, but did not consult the fuel gauges.
Witness and Descent
A witness on the ground reported hearing the engine sputtering as the airplane flew overhead. Unable to maintain altitude, the pilot tried to reach an open field but ultimately collided with the roof of a private residence. The aircraft came to rest in the backyard of the residence.
Post-Accident Examination
After exiting the airplane, the pilot reported not seeing any fuel leaks or streaks. Examination of the aircraft revealed that both wing tanks were empty. There was no staining of the grass or foliage surrounding the airplane. When the wings were removed for salvage, less than one pint of fuel was drained from the fuel lines.
Conclusion
The aircraft experienced a total loss of engine power, and subsequent inspection found no fuel in the tanks or lines. The specific cause of the fuel exhaustion was not identified in the report.
