Accident Overview

On June 6, 2010, at approximately 0930 central daylight time, a Piper PA-28R-180, registration N7559J, was substantially damaged when the nose landing gear collapsed upon landing at Kingfisher Airport (F92), Kingfisher, Oklahoma. The aircraft was registered to and operated by the pilot under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The local flight had originated from F92 at approximately 0915. The pilot and one passenger were on board; neither reported injuries.

Pilot's Account

According to the pilot, this was his second landing on the grass strip that day. Winds were gusty with a slight crosswind. He turned onto final approach at 80 knots indicated airspeed (KIAS) with the landing gear extended and flaps fully deployed. During the round out, the airplane floated. The pilot lowered the nose to help the aircraft settle, and the stall warning horn sounded intermittently. He applied full throttle, and the engine responded, but the airplane continued descending. The subsequent landing was hard: the left wing struck the ground, the airplane bounced, and then the right wing struck the ground. The nose landing gear collapsed, and the airplane skidded to a stop. The pilot stated he had not taken density altitude into account when preparing for his second landing and believed that a higher landing speed would have prevented the stall.
