Flight and Maneuvers
The pilot reported that after takeoff, a southbound climb was initiated until sufficient altitude was gained to maintain terrain clearance, followed by a turn to the north-northeast. The climb continued while following a canyon, with the pilot noting light turbulence throughout the flight.
Canyon Navigation and Performance Loss
As the pilot flew up the valley, the northwestern side was chosen to gain extra lift from the wind. The airplane was climbing but as the valley narrowed, the climb rate decreased and the airplane began to descend. The pilot then shifted to the other side of the valley, which increased the rate of descent.
Stall Warning and Collision
While attempting to maintain altitude, airspeed began to decrease. The pilot verified that full power was still being applied. The stall warning horn periodically activated as the pilot attempted to avoid trees. The airplane collided with a tree and nosed over upon impacting terrain, resulting in substantial damage.
