A solo student pilot reported an unexpected pitch-up during flare, followed by a hard nose wheel touchdown that damaged the firewall, floorboard, and propeller.

Flight Details

The solo student pilot flew for about 40 minutes to the destination airport intending to meet a family member for lunch. Upon arrival, he prepared to land.

Landing Incident

During the landing flare, the pilot pulled back on the control yoke to initiate the maneuver. However, the airplane's nose pitched up more than he anticipated. In response, he pushed forward on the yoke, which caused the nose wheel to contact the runway surface abruptly. The pilot described the nose wheel as being "dropped" onto the runway.

After the initial contact, the nose wheel porpoised (bounced) once before touching down again. The pilot then applied back pressure to the control yoke, which stabilized the airplane.

Post-Landing Findings

The pilot was unaware of the extent of the damage until he returned to his departure airport. Inspection revealed that the nose wheel had struck the runway with sufficient force to buckle the lower part of the firewall and the forward portion of the floorboard. Additionally, the propeller had made contact with the runway surface.

The pilot reported no mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane at the time of the accident.
