Accident Overview
A pilot and a passenger were on a local flight when the airplane struck trees shortly after takeoff, resulting in substantial damage. The pilot reported filling the airplane with 26 gallons of fuel prior to the flight. A preflight inspection was performed before the pilot and passenger boarded and taxied to the runway.
Flight and Impact Details
The pilot set the flaps to 10 degrees and departed from runway 25. After becoming airborne, the pilot began a 30-degree left turn and realized the airplane would not clear nearby trees. The pilot heard the stall warning horn before the airplane contacted the trees. Subsequently, the airplane fell to the ground and came to rest inverted.
Pilot Statement and Conditions
In his statement, the pilot commented that he "made a poor decision due to weight and very hot conditions." No mechanical failures or malfunctions were reported. Winds recorded at an airport 19 miles to the south around the time of the accident were calm.
