Accident Details

On September 22, 2010, at approximately 1000 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 172S, registration N2459K, operated by McAir Aviation and piloted by a private pilot, was substantially damaged following a hard landing at Vance Brand Airport (LMO) in Longmont, Colorado. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The personal flight was conducted under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 without a flight plan. The pilot and two passengers on board were not injured. The local flight had originated at Rocky Mountain Airport (BJC) in Broomfield, Colorado, around 0930.

Landing Attempts

According to the pilot's accident report, she intended to perform a full-stop landing at LMO before returning to BJC. On final approach to runway 29, with the visual approach slope indicator (VASI) inoperative, the flaps were set to 30 degrees. However, the airplane was high and fast. The airplane touched down and bounced. In response, the pilot added power and pitched down, but overcompensated, causing a second bounce. Full power was then applied, and the pilot executed a go-around. The second landing was successful, and the pilot returned to BJC. No loss of engine RPM was noted during the return flight.

Damage

After landing at BJC, damage to the propeller tips was observed. Further examination of the airplane revealed a buckled firewall. The pilot later informed the operator that she was "high and fast" on final approach at LMO.
