During a full stop landing on a turf runway, the airplane touched down with extra speed, and braking was ineffective on dry grass. The instructor applied left rudder to avoid a ditch, but the right main gear entered the ditch, causing the airplane to flip.

Accident Details

A flight instructor and a student were practicing touch and go landings. During an attempted full stop landing to runway 36, which is a turf runway measuring 1,938 feet long and 50 feet wide, the airplane touched down with "slight extra speed" approximately 100 feet beyond the approach end of the runway. The flight instructor then took control of the airplane and applied the brakes, but there was "no friction on the mowed dry grass."

Sequence of Events

As the airplane approached the end of the runway, the instructor applied left rudder to avoid a ditch in front of the airplane. Subsequently, the right main landing gear went into the ditch, and the airplane flipped over.

Damage and Inspection

Examination of the airplane revealed that the vertical stabilizer and rudder were bent. No mechanical anomalies were reported with the airplane prior to the accident.

Instructor's Remarks

The instructor reported that they should have landed on the adjacent asphalt runway or performed a go-around after "over-shooting final" during the landing.
