Event Summary
During an attempted takeoff for an aerial application flight, the pilot observed that the engine power seemed low. Despite this, he continued the takeoff. After realizing the airplane would not remain airborne, the pilot pulled the dump handle, releasing approximately 40 gallons from the 150-gallon load. The airplane became airborne roughly 300 feet before the departure end of the runway, at which point it experienced a total loss of engine power. The pilot lowered the nose, and the airplane impacted the runway's overrun area, nosing over. It came to rest inverted about 300 feet past the departure end of the runway.
Pilot Actions
The pilot initially noted low engine power during the takeoff roll. He continued the takeoff, then, perceiving that the airplane would not maintain flight, he jettisoned about 40 gallons of the chemical load. After becoming airborne, a total loss of engine power occurred, prompting the pilot to lower the nose. The airplane subsequently struck the overrun area and flipped onto its back.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage, including structural damage to both wings and the fuselage. The pilot was uninjured.
Examination Findings
Post-accident examination by the Federal Aviation Administration revealed that two cylinders were unable to produce compression and one magneto was inoperative. No other anomalies were found.
