Incident Overview
A pilot reported that during the first approach to land, windy conditions affected alignment with the runway, prompting a go-around. On the second attempt, alignment was good and the approach seemed normal until the flare.
Flare and Touchdown
According to the pilot, the airplane was flared a bit too much. The stall horn sounded, and the pilot slightly pushed the yoke forward. The airplane dropped rapidly for the last few feet and the touchdown was hard. After landing, the pilot taxied to parking and tied the airplane down. It was dark, and the pilot did not expect or notice any damage at the time.
Discovery of Damage
The following morning, the pilot's instructor called and asked if a hard landing had occurred. Examination of the aircraft revealed a buckled firewall and sheet metal damage on top of the wing.
