An American Airlines flight ran off the end of the runway at Jackson Hole Airport after landing in snowy conditions.

What happened

On December 29, 2010, at approximately 11:38 mountain standard time, an American Airlines Boeing 757-223, registration N668AA, exited the runway at the departure end of runway 19 at Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) in Wyoming. The aircraft had arrived from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). After landing, the airplane traveled approximately 730 feet past the departure end of the runway before coming to a stop in deep snow.

At the time of the incident, the weather at the airport consisted of instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) with light snow and a visibility of 1 mile. There were 179 passengers, 2 pilots, and 4 flight attendants on board. All occupants were not injured, though the aircraft sustained minor damage.

Probable cause

A manufacturing defect in a clutch mechanism prevented the automatic deployment of the speedbrakes following touchdown, and the captain failed to manually extend them.
