Incident Overview
A private pilot was returning to his private airstrip after practicing landings at a local airport. During the final approach, which is conducted over water, the pilot encountered a downdraft as the airplane transitioned from flying over water to flying over land. The downdraft caused the airplane to touch down short of the intended landing area. Upon contact with the ground, the airplane nosed over, resulting in substantial damage to the vertical stabilizer and rudder.
